When You Struggle With Your Worth: Psalm 17:8
Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay
Opening Prayer
Jesus, I feel small and exposed today.
Like anyone could hurt me and it would barely register. Would You cover me? Would You hold me the way You hold the things You treasure most?
Keep me close. I need close today.
Amen.
Scripture
Psalm 17:8
“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.”
Reflection
Watch what you do when something flies toward your face.
You do not think. You do not weigh your options. Your hand comes up, your eyes squeeze shut, your whole body moves to protect that one small, tender place. The pupil of your eye is the most guarded part of you. Everything in you exists to keep it safe.
That is the picture David reaches for. “Keep me as the apple of your eye.” He is asking God to guard him the way a body guards its own sight: instantly, fiercely, without being asked twice. To God, you are treasured.
The Hebrew word for the apple of the eye is literally the pupil, the little dark centre through which all light enters. It is the most vulnerable and most precious part of the whole system. David is saying: God, treat me like that. Let me be that precious to You.
Then he adds the second picture. “Hide me in the shadow of your wings.” Think of a mother bird when a storm rolls in. She does not send her chicks out to be brave. She gathers them under herself. They disappear into her feathers, and the storm hits her instead of them. That is the hiding David is asking for. Not a hiding born of shame. A hiding born of being kept.
There is a difference between being overlooked and being covered. Being overlooked says you do not matter enough to be noticed. Being covered says you matter so much you are being protected. When life has made you feel small, it is easy to confuse the two. God has never overlooked you. Not once. He has been covering you the whole time.
Your worth is not measured by how visible you are. Some of the most precious things in the world are kept hidden: the seed under the soil, the pearl inside the shell, the child asleep in the next room. Hidden does not mean forgotten. Hidden means guarded.
So today, stop trying to earn a spotlight. You are already the apple of His eye. The most guarded place in the universe is not a vault or a fortress. It is the centre of God’s gaze, and that is exactly where you are.
Journaling
-
Where have you been confusing being covered with being overlooked?
You might start with something like: I thought God forgot me in that hard year, but maybe He was sheltering me.
-
What does it feel like to imagine yourself as the pupil of God’s eye, the part He guards without thinking?
It might be something small and gentle, like: it feels strange and safe at the same time, like being worth protecting.
-
What storm do you need to stop facing alone and let His wings take instead?
You could gently say: the worry about money keeps me up, and I want to tuck it under His feathers tonight.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, my Shelter,
Thank You for guarding me like the pupil of Your eye. Thank You for the shadow of Your wings, for the covering I did not earn and cannot lose. When I feel small, remind me: small things are the ones You hold closest.
I am treasured. I am kept. I am Yours.
Amen.
