When You Need Hope: Romans 8:28
Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay
Opening Prayer
Jesus, there are pieces of my life on the floor today.
Things I cannot put back together and would not know how to fix if I could. Would You pick them up? I am handing You the broken bits.
Make something of them. Please.
Amen.
Scripture
Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Reflection
Have you ever dropped a plate and just stood there staring at the pieces?
There is that split second where your brain refuses it. Then the reality settles in: it is broken, and you cannot unbreak it. Some seasons of life feel exactly like that moment, stretched out over months. The pieces are on the floor. You do not know where to start. You are not even sure starting is possible.
Paul wrote this verse to people who knew what broken felt like. Notice what he does not say. He does not say all things are good. The diagnosis was not good. The betrayal was not good. The loss was not good. He says God works in all things for good. The things themselves can be terrible. What God does with them is not.
Think of a mosaic. Nobody looks at a pile of shattered tile and calls it beautiful. But an artist can take those exact sharp, useless fragments and set them into something no whole tile could ever become. The cracks do not disappear. They become the lines of the picture. Even the pieces that feel shattered now become mosaics in His hands.
Here is the part we have to handle honestly. The promise is for “those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This is not a blanket guarantee that everything works out for everyone. It is a covenant promise for God’s people. If you love Him, if you belong to Him, then this verse has your name on it. The working is happening whether you can see it or not.
The working is present tense. “God works.” Not worked, past. Not will work, someday. Works. Right now. In the middle of the mess, with the pieces still on the floor, He is already arranging. You do not have to wait until you feel hopeful to be in the middle of hope being built.
So do not rush to sweep up the pieces yourself. Do not try to glue them back into the old shape. Hand them over, sharp edges and all, and let the Artist do what artists do. The finished piece will not look like the old plate. It will look like something better: a life that could only have been made this way.
Journaling
-
What pieces are on your floor right now that you have been trying to fix yourself?
You might start with something like: my finances are a mess and I keep trying to solve it alone at 2 a.m.
-
What is the difference for you between “all things are good” and “God works all things for good”?
It might be something small and gentle, like: the first one feels like a lie, but the second one feels like a hand reaching in.
-
What would it look like to hand the pieces over instead of sweeping them up?
You could gently say: I would stop pretending I am fine and actually pray about it, out loud, today.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, my Artist,
Thank You for not needing whole pieces to make something beautiful. Thank You for working right now, in the middle of my mess, for my good. I hand You the fragments, sharp edges and all.
Make Your mosaic. I trust Your hands with every piece.
Amen.
