When You Feel Afraid or Triggered: Psalm 91:4

When You Feel Afraid or Triggered: Psalm 91:4

Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay

Opening Prayer

Jesus, I feel exposed today.

Everything in me wants to hide. Tuck me under Your wing. Let me feel, even for a moment, what it is to be covered instead of watched.

I am coming close, Lord. Keep me there.

Amen.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 91:4

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

Devotional Reflection

Watch a mother bird when a storm rolls in. She does not lecture her chicks about the weather. She spreads her wings, and they scurry underneath, pressed against her warmth, and the rain hits her back instead of them. They are not pretending the storm is not happening. They are simply not facing it alone or unprotected.

That is the picture God paints of Himself here. Not a distant general. A sheltering wing.

“He will cover you with his feathers.” Feathers are soft. This is not the hard, cold protection of armour. This is tenderness as a defence. God does not only guard you. He cushions you. The same God who spoke galaxies into being bends low enough to tuck you in.

“And under his wings you will find refuge.” Refuge is not a feeling. It is a place. You can go there. When the news is bad, when the memory ambushes you, when the future looks threatening, there is an actual shelter with your name on it, and it is Him.

“His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” A shield moves with the soldier. A rampart is the high stone wall around the city. God’s faithfulness is both: it goes where you go, and it stands firm where you cannot. You do not have to hold the shield up. He is the shield.

Here is the truth this verse wants you to carry today: you are not exposed. You are covered.

Feeling exposed is one of fear’s favourite lies. It tells you that everyone can see your weakness, that the danger has a clear shot, that you are standing in the open with no defence. But feelings are weather, not geography. The truth of where you stand does not change with the forecast. You are tucked under the wing of the Almighty. The storm can rage all it wants. It cannot reach what He has covered.

Jesus Himself used this picture. Looking over Jerusalem, He said He had longed to gather His people “as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.” That longing has not changed. It is directed at you today, in whatever storm you are weathering.

So stop standing in the rain trying to be brave. Come under the wing. That is not retreat. That is refuge. Refuge is exactly where frightened hearts belong.

Journaling Reflection

  1. Where do you feel most exposed right now, as if the storm has a clear shot at you?

You might start with something like: at work, where everyone seems to see my mistakes, or in my own thoughts late at night.

  2. What would it mean, practically, to tuck yourself under His wing today instead of bracing in the open?

It might be something small and gentle, like: pausing to pray before I open my email, or speaking this verse out loud when the fear spikes.

  3. What is one thing you can stop defending today, because His faithfulness is your shield and rampart?

You could gently say: I can stop rehearsing my self defence for the conversation tomorrow and trust Him to guard my heart in it.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, my shelter,

Thank You for feathers instead of just armour. Thank You for being soft enough to comfort me and strong enough to defend me at the same time.

When I feel exposed, cover me. When the storm rages, be my refuge. I am tucking myself under Your wing today, and I will stay there as long as I need.

Amen.
