When You Feel Afraid or Triggered: Joshua 1:9
Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay
Opening Prayer
Jesus, I am standing at the edge of something new and my knees feel weak.
Everything familiar is behind me and everything ahead is unknown. Be my courage. Go with me into what I cannot see yet.
I do not need the whole map. I just need You beside me.
Amen.
Scripture Reading
Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Devotional Reflection
Moving day has a particular feeling. The boxes are packed. The truck is loaded. You take one last look at the empty rooms, and then you drive toward an address you have never lived at, down streets you do not know yet. Everything behind you is memory. Everything ahead of you is unfamiliar. That in-between feeling, one foot in the old and one foot in the new, is exactly where Joshua was standing.
Moses was dead. The leader who had parted the sea and carried the people for forty years was gone. Joshua, his successor, was staring at a flooded Jordan River and fortified cities full of giants. Nobody would have blamed him for shaking. God did not blame him either. Instead, God gave him the same command three times: be strong and courageous.
But notice what the courage is built on. It is not built on Joshua’s experience, his army, or his confidence. It is built on a promise: “the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Courage, in God’s vocabulary, is not the absence of fear. It is the presence of God in the middle of it.
Your body remembers fear. Long after your mind has moved on, your body keeps the record. A slammed door, a certain look, a hospital smell, and you are right back there, heart hammering, hands shaking. That is not weakness. That is your body doing what bodies do. Into that very real, very physical fear, God speaks a very real, very physical promise: I am with you. Wherever you go.
Wherever. Not just in the sanctuary. Not just on the good days. In the kitchen at midnight when the memories come. In the meeting room when your voice shakes. In the car before the appointment. In the conversation you have been dreading. Wherever your feet take you, His presence goes first.
Fear tells you that you are walking into the unknown alone. God reminds you of presence. You have never once walked anywhere alone, not on your bravest day and not on your most terrified one. The unknown is only unknown to you. He has already been there.
So take the step. Shaking knees and all. Courage is not waiting until you feel ready. Courage is moving while you are still afraid, because the One who goes with you is not.
Journaling Reflection
-
What new territory are you standing at the edge of right now?
You might start with something like: starting over in a new city, or the treatment plan, or the conversation I have been putting off for months.
-
What does your body remember that your faith is still learning to answer?
It might be something honest, like: my chest tightens every time the phone rings after 9 p.m., even when there is nothing wrong.
-
What would change if you truly believed He goes with you wherever you go, including the places you dread most?
You could gently say: I would stop rehearsing disaster and start practising His presence, one room at a time.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, my courage,
Thank You for not waiting until I feel brave. Thank You for going with me into every room, every appointment, every unknown, before I ever set foot there.
When my body remembers fear, remind my heart of presence. Make me strong and courageous, not because I am fearless, but because You are with me wherever I go.
Amen.
