When You Feel Afraid or Triggered: Isaiah 43:2

When You Feel Afraid or Triggered: Isaiah 43:2

Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay

Opening Prayer

Jesus, the water is high today.

I am not asking You to explain the river. I am asking You to be in it with me. Keep me from being swept away. Hold me steady in the current.

Walk through this with me, Lord. That is all I am asking.

Amen.

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 43:2

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Devotional Reflection

Have you ever watched a river in the spring, when the snow is melting and the water runs fast and brown and loud? It does not ask your permission. It just comes, and everything near it has to reckon with it.

God spoke this verse to people who knew exactly what deep water felt like. Israel was in exile, far from home, living in the aftermath of everything they had lost. They were not wading through a puddle. They were in over their heads. Into that, God does not say, “There will be no water.” He says, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.”

Read the promise the way it is written. When, not if. The waters are assumed. God is not surprised by the river you are standing in, and He is not withholding His presence until you reach the far bank.

Here is the part we often miss: God does not remove the waters. He anchors you in them.

An anchor does not calm the sea. It holds the ship. The waves still roll. The wind still howls. But the vessel stays, because something unseen is gripping the seabed. That is what His presence does in the middle of your flood. The circumstances may not change today. The diagnosis, the debt, the difficult person, the memory that keeps rising like water through floorboards. They may all still be there. But you will not be swept away, because you are held.

Notice the progression in the verse: waters, rivers, fire. Each one deeper, hotter, more threatening than the last. With each one, the same steady promise: I will be with you. You will not be swept over. You will not be burned. The threat escalates. The presence does not waver.

Some days faith looks like standing on the shore, watching the water and wondering how you will ever get across. God is not on the far bank, waving you over. He is in the current beside you, one hand on your shoulder, walking you through at the pace your legs can manage.

You do not have to be unafraid of the water. You only have to trust the One who is in it with you.

Journaling Reflection

  1. What are the waters you are standing in right now? Name them plainly.

You might start with something like: the medical bills, the strained relationship with my daughter, and the anxiety that shows up every evening.

  2. Where have you been asking God to remove the river, instead of asking Him to anchor you in it?

It might be something honest, like: I keep praying for the situation to disappear instead of praying for His presence inside it.

  3. When has God held you steady in deep water before, and what does that memory tell you about today?

You could gently say: He carried me through the year after the divorce, and if He held me then, He is holding me now.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, my anchor,

Thank You for getting into the water instead of shouting instructions from the shore. Thank You that the river does not get a vote on whether You stay.

When the current pulls hard, remind my heart what my eyes cannot see: I am held. I will not be swept away. I will not be burned. Walk me through at Your pace, Lord. I trust the grip of Your hand.

Amen.
