When Shame Takes Over: Psalm 34:5
Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay
Opening Prayer
Jesus, I have been hiding my face.
Not from You, exactly. From everyone. From mirrors, from photographs, from eye contact. Shame makes me want to disappear, and I am tired of disappearing.
Look at me with love until I can look back.
Amen.
Scripture
Psalm 34:5
Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.
Reflection
You know the morning.
You catch your reflection in the bathroom mirror and your first thought is not kind. You pull your hair forward to hide behind it. You cancel the video call and choose the phone instead. You take the long way around the office so no one sees you coming. Shame is not just a feeling. It is a posture. It turns faces downward and eyes away.
David wrote our verse for people living in that posture.
Psalm 34 was written when David was at one of the lowest points of his life, running from a king who wanted him dead, hiding among enemies, so desperate he pretended to be insane. He had every reason to hang his head. Instead, he discovered something that changed his posture forever.
“Those who look to him are radiant.”
Radiant is a sunrise word. It means glowing, lit from within, like a face catching first light. David is saying that the direction of your gaze changes the condition of your face. Look down at your shame, and shame grows. Look up at Him, and something in you starts to shine.
“Their faces are never covered with shame.”
Never. Not sometimes, not when you have earned it, not after you have cleaned yourself up. Never. The shame you feel is not your identity. It is a covering that does not belong on you, like a coat you picked up by mistake and have been wearing for years. It was never tailored for you. It was never yours.
Here is the gentle truth: you do not have to fix your face before you look up. The looking is what does the fixing. One glance toward Him, in the middle of the messy morning, in the middle of the shame posture, and the light starts to do its quiet work.
So today, in the bathroom mirror, in the parking lot, in the moment you want to disappear: look up. Just look up. Let the radiant do what striving never could.
Journaling
-
Where does shame change your posture: the mirror, the photograph, the room full of people, somewhere else?
You might start with something like: I avoid mirrors most mornings, and I always sit at the back where no one will notice me.
-
What “coat” of shame have you been wearing so long you started believing it was tailored for you?
It might be something small and honest, like: the belief that I am too much, or that I am the problem in every room.
-
What would one upward glance look like for you today, right in the middle of the shame posture?
You could gently say: I will pray in the car before I go in, and walk in with my head up even if my heart is shaking.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, thank You for the upward glance.
Thank You that my face was never meant to be covered with shame. As I look to You today, do Your radiant work in me. Lift my chin. Light my face. Remind me who I am.
I am Yours, and shame is not my name.
Need Prayer? We would love to pray for you.
Amen.
