When You Feel Weak or Exhausted: Matthew 11:28

When You Feel Weak or Exhausted: Matthew 11:28

Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay

Opening Prayer

Jesus, I am so tired of carrying all of this.

My shoulders ache with the weight of it. I have been strong for everyone else, and I have nothing left for me. I am coming to You, just as I am, heavy and worn.

Give me Your rest.

Amen.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Devotional Reflection

Have you ever done the one trip grocery run? Arms loaded with bags, keys between your teeth, the milk jug swinging, plastic handles cutting into your fingers, and you are doing that slow sideways shuffle to the door because there is no way you are going back for a second trip. We laugh about it, but it is a perfect picture of how many of us live: overloaded, white knuckling, refusing to set anything down.

Jesus looks at that version of you, bags cutting into your fingers, and He says the most tender thing: “Come to me.”

Not “get your life together first.” Not “finish the list, then rest.” Come. As you are. Weary and burdened. Those two words cover all of it: the tiredness in your body and the heaviness on your heart. The physical exhaustion and the invisible loads, the grief, the worry, the responsibility that never clocks out. All of it qualifies. If you are weary, this invitation has your name on it.

“I will give you rest.” Notice He does not say He will give you a nap, though naps are holy too. He gives rest itself, the deep kind, rest for your soul. The very next verse explains how: take His yoke, learn from Him, because He is gentle and humble in heart. A yoke is the wooden frame that joins two oxen together so they pull as one. Jesus is not asking you to pull harder. He is climbing into the yoke beside you so you never pull alone again.

Rest is spiritual, not laziness.

We have confused rest with quitting, and stopping with failing. But rest was God’s idea before it was a wellness trend. He rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but because rest is holy. When you rest, you are not being lazy. You are declaring, with your body, that the world does not depend on you holding it together. That is worship.

So set down a bag today. Just one. The one that was never yours to carry alone. Come to Him with the rest of them still in your hands. He will take the weight, and He will teach your soul what it feels like to breathe again.

Journaling Reflection

  1. What are you carrying right now that was never yours to carry alone?

You might start with something like: everyone’s emotions in my house, plus the finances, plus the future, all on my shoulders.

  2. What keeps you from coming to Him with it today: pride, habit, guilt, or simply forgetting He invited you?

It might be something honest, like: I forget. I just keep carrying and forget that stopping to pray is even an option.

  3. What would real rest look like for you this week, not as escape, but as trust?

You could gently say: it would look like an actual day off without my phone, trusting that the world will survive without me managing it.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, my rest,

Thank You for the invitation. Thank You for not waiting until I am rested to welcome me, but welcoming me weary, burdened, bags and all.

I am coming to You now. Take the weight. Teach my soul to rest in You. Show me that stopping is not failing, it is trusting.

Amen.
