When You Feel Unloved or Unlovable: 1 John 3:1

When You Feel Unloved or Unlovable: 1 John 3:1

Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay

Opening Prayer

Jesus, I am tired of earning.

Every relationship feels like a performance review. I keep trying to be lovable enough, good enough, easy enough. It is exhausting.

Show me what love looks like when it is not earned.

Amen.

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:1

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

Devotional Reflection

Think of the person in your life who always serves too much food.

You say you are full, and the spoon is already moving. “Just a little more.” The plate overflows. The table groans. There is dessert you did not ask for and containers to take home. You did not earn the extra. You did not perform for it. It was lavished on you simply because you showed up and you are loved.

That is the exact word John uses for God’s love: lavished.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us.” Lavished love is overflowing love. It does not measure. It does not portion. It does not say, “You have had enough.” It pours and pours, and when the cup is full, it keeps pouring, because the Giver delights in the giving.

“That we should be called children of God!” Children do not earn their place at the table. They do not interview for the family. They belong because they were born into it, or adopted into it, and belonging is not a wage. You are not God’s employee, working for love. You are His child, receiving it.

“And that is what we are!” John cannot contain himself. He states the fact, then shouts it again, as if to make sure no anxious heart misses it. That is what we are. Not what we might become if we behave. What we are, right now, as we are.

Lavished love is overflowing, not performance-based. You do not have to be easier, quieter, more put-together, or less needy to qualify. The spoon is already moving. The plate is already full. The only thing required of you is to show up at the table and let yourself be fed.

So stop auditioning. Put down the performance review. You are not being evaluated. You are being lavished upon, by a Father who has never once served a measured portion of love in His life.

Journaling Reflection

  1. Where in your life are you still auditioning for love, trying to be lovable enough to earn your place?

You might start with something like: at work I never say no, and with friends I am always the funny one, because I am afraid of what happens if I stop.

  2. What would it feel like to be a child at the table instead of an employee earning wages?

It might be something small and honest, like: it would feel restful and terrifying, like putting down a weight I have carried so long I forgot it was there.

  3. What is one “performance” you can set down today, and let lavished love meet you instead?

You could gently say: I will not apologize for crying in front of my friend today. I will let her love me as I am.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for the overflowing plate.

Thank You that I am Your child, not Your employee. Teach me to stop auditioning and start receiving. Lavish Your great love on me today. I am showing up at the table, just as I am. That is what I am: Yours.

Amen.
