When You Feel Unloved or Unlovable: Romans 8:38-39

When You Feel Unloved or Unlovable: Romans 8:38-39

Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay

Opening Prayer

Jesus, I have a list.

It is the list of reasons I am too much and not enough, the reasons love should pass me by. Trauma. Shame. Fear. My past. I have carried it so long it feels like part of me.

Take the list today. Answer it with Yours.

Amen.

Scripture Reading

Romans 8:38-39

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Devotional Reflection

Some of us keep a list on the fridge.

Not a grocery list. A disqualification list. The reasons we are unlovable, written in our own handwriting, reviewed far too often. Not after what I did. Not with this past. Not with this body, this history, this temper, this fear. We read it the way other people read the news: daily, and with growing dread.

Paul had a list too. But his list runs the other direction.

“Neither death nor life.” Your worst day cannot separate you. Your best day cannot earn you closer. The full range of human existence, from the delivery room to the funeral home, is covered.

“Neither angels nor demons.” Nothing in the spiritual realm, light or dark, has veto power over God’s love for you. Not the enemy’s accusations. Not your own.

“Neither the present nor the future.” What you did yesterday and what you fear about tomorrow are both named and both powerless. The present cannot separate you. The future cannot separate you.

“Nor any powers, neither height nor depth.” No authority, no addiction, no diagnosis, no depth of despair you could sink to and no height of success you could climb to. The vertical extremes are covered.

“Nor anything else in all creation.” Paul runs out of categories and sweeps up the leftovers. Anything else. In all creation. If it exists, it cannot separate you.

Read your list again: not trauma. Not shame. Not fear. Not your past. Now read His list: neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation.

His list is longer. His list wins.

Nothing you have done, nothing done to you, nothing you fear becoming, can separate you from the love of God. The list on your fridge has been overruled by the list in Romans. Take yours down. His is the one that stands.

Journaling Reflection

  1. What is on your disqualification list, the reasons you have decided make you unlovable?

You might start with something like: my divorce, my anger, the years I wasted, the things I cannot undo.

  2. Which item on Paul’s list speaks most directly to the thing you fear could separate you?

It might be something small and honest, like: “neither the present nor the future,” because I am terrified my past defines my future.

  3. What would it look like to take your list off the fridge today and replace it with His?

You could gently say: I will write Romans 8:38-39 on a card and put it where the old list was.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for the longer list.

Thank You that nothing in all creation, nothing I have done and nothing done to me, can separate me from Your love. I take my list down today. Yours is the one I will read.

I am Yours, and nothing changes that.

Amen.
