When You’re Healing From Trauma: Isaiah 61:1

Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay

Opening Prayer

Jesus, the wound is old but it still aches.

People think I should be past it by now. You know I am not, and You have never rushed me. Come close today the way only You can.

Bind me up. I am Yours to mend.

Amen.

Scripture

Isaiah 61:1

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

Reflection

When Jesus stood up in His hometown synagogue and chose the passage He would read, He chose this one.

Luke tells us He unrolled the scroll, found this exact place, and read it out loud. Then He sat down and said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Of all the verses He could have picked to announce His mission, He picked the one about binding up the brokenhearted. That was His opening statement. That is who He came for.

Let that settle. Jesus came specifically for trauma survivors.

He did not come only for the put-together, the strong, the ones with tidy testimonies. His mission statement names the brokenhearted first. If your heart has been shattered by what someone did, by what you survived, by what you cannot unsee, then you are not on the edges of His mission. You are at the centre of it.

Think of an emergency room. The doctors do not wait for the wounded to walk in looking presentable. They come to the stretcher. They start where the bleeding is. That is what “He has sent me” means. Sent. On purpose. To you. The binding was never your job to perform on yourself. It was His assignment from the beginning.

Look at what travels with the binding. Freedom for the captives. Release from darkness for the prisoners. Trauma locks people up long after the event is over. It builds a cell out of memory and locks the door from the inside. Jesus does not stand outside that cell and shout instructions. He comes in with keys. Freedom is not something you have to earn your way toward. It is something He brings to you.

You may have been told, directly or quietly, that what happened to you disqualifies you from tenderness. That you should be over it. That strong people move on. Jesus disagrees. He read your verse out loud in front of everyone and called it His mission. You do not have to be past it to be loved in it. You only have to let Him near the broken places.

He was sent for this. Let Him do what He came to do.

Journaling

  1. Where have you been trying to bind up your own heart instead of letting Jesus do it?

You might start with something like: I keep telling myself to just get over it, as if willpower could heal a wound.

  2. What “cell” has trauma built in your life, and what would freedom from it look like?

It might be something small and gentle, like: I avoid certain places and I want to be free to go anywhere again.

  3. What changes when you hear that Jesus named the brokenhearted as His mission, not His afterthought?

You could gently say: it makes me feel chosen instead of damaged, like I matter to Him on purpose.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, my Healer,

Thank You for choosing the brokenhearted as Your mission. Thank You for coming to the stretcher instead of waiting for me to walk in. Bind what I cannot bind. Free what I cannot free.

I stop rushing myself. I let You do what You were sent to do.

Amen.
