DEVOTIONALS ~ WHEN YOUR HEART IS BROKEN
When Your Heart Is Broken: Psalm 34:18
Love your Legacy Devotional ~ By Tay
Opening Prayer
Jesus, my heart is in pieces and I am tired of pretending it is not.
I have smiled through conversations and held it together in public, and now I am alone with the ache. Come close. Sit with me in this.
You are near the brokenhearted. Be near to me.
Amen.
Scripture Reading
Psalm 34:18
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Devotional Reflection
There is a cry that happens at the kitchen sink.
The water is running. Your hands are in the warm dishwater. And suddenly the tears come, quiet and unstoppable, dripping into the sink like they belong there. You are not sobbing. You are just leaking grief into an ordinary Tuesday, because the heart does not schedule its breaking for convenient hours.
David knew that sink.
He wrote this psalm while running for his life, hiding in caves, pretending to be insane in front of a foreign king to survive. His heart was not broken in a poetic way. It was broken in a terrified, exhausted, everything-falling-apart way. And from inside that breaking, he discovered something he needed the rest of us to know.
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted.”
Not close to the put-together. Not close to the strong, the cheerful, the ones who have it all figured out. Close to the brokenhearted. Your tears do not push Him away. They pull Him nearer. They are not a sign of distance between you and God. They are a place of connection, the exact spot where He leans in.
Think about what “close” means. Close is breath-on-your-cheek close. Close is the way someone sits beside you on the edge of the bed when words have run out. Close is not a doctrine. It is a presence.
“And saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Crushed is a strong word. It means pressed down, flattened, like grapes under a stone. David does not dress it up, and neither should you. If your spirit feels crushed today, you are not failing at faith. You are exactly the person this verse was written for.
God does not stand at a safe distance waiting for you to reassemble yourself. He comes close to the pieces. He saves the crushed, not the composed.
So let the tears come at the sink. They are not wasted water. They are the sound of a heart that loved deeply, and a God who draws near to exactly that.
Journaling Reflection
-
Where do your tears tend to come out, in the ordinary moments no one sees?
You might start with something like: in the car at red lights, or folding laundry, or in the shower where the water hides it.
-
What have your tears been trying to tell you that you keep apologizing for instead of listening to?
It might be something small and honest, like: I keep saying sorry for crying, as if grief were bad manners.
-
What would it feel like to let your tears be a meeting place with God today, instead of evidence that something is wrong with you?
You could gently say: it would feel like permission, like I could stop wiping them away so fast.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being close to the brokenhearted.
Thank You for not needing me composed, cheerful, or finished grieving. Meet me at the sink, in the car, in the ordinary breaking places. My tears are Yours. Hold them
Need Prayer? We would love to pray for you.
